— 517 WEST 113 STREET · Manhattan“Pros: Close to campus for Columbia students and occupied by many other columbia students. I like the layout of my apartment and get great natural light in my bedroom. Rooms are relatively spacious with enough space to fit full bed, desk, and shelving unit. Cons: The elevator is frequently having problems and the mail area is not secure although I have never personally had an issue with packages being stolen. If your room is street facing be prepared to hear everything: construction, sirens, drunken conversations, etc. Management is honestly frustrating to deal with, but probably not out of the ordinary for NYC. The Super is nice though and responds quickly to problems in my experience. The worst experience I had while living here was in the winter when they took months to turn on our heat. The whole building lacked heat and hot water into December. Did not receive so much as an apology from management. They simply said that it was an issue with coned and that the problem would endure indefinitely. They did offer us space heaters, which are not meant to be on overnight or when out of the house as they are known fire hazards. The cold broke me down mentally after a while, and I was incredibly concerned for the elderly tenants in the building who also had to endure these conditions. Still have not received a rent credit or any admission of fault from the building management. Incredibly demoralizing. I also know people who have had trouble getting their security deposits back. Advice to landlord: See your tenants as people and address their concerns.”

— 517 WEST 113 STREET · Manhattan“Pros: The building was ok and decently clean but we had occasional roaches and mice. The super was reactive and helpful. Lots of students so could be loud at times but never had an issue. Cons: The management company was terrible. Super unresponsive, took forever to give us the deposit check back, would not answer the phone ever. Once I called and argued with them about something and was told to "shut the f** up!".”
